VICKERS PVH Series Piston Pump: Pump Operation

The rotation of the pump drive shaft causes the cylinder block, shoe plate and pistons to rotate. The shoe plate holds the piston shoes against the yoke face. The angle of the yoke face generates an oscillating motion for every piston in a cylinder block. There is an inlet and outlet ports that open into a kidney-slotted wafer plate. Once outside the cylinder block, there is generation of a vacuum drawing fluid into this space by pressure from the atmosphere. As such it moves along with the cylinder block past the intake kidney slot. Afterward, when piston move backward, liquid spills out through the outlet port of cylinder block.

A. Lubrication:

  • The system’s fluid provides internal lubrication. Shaft couplings should be lubricated as prescribed by their manufacturers. To prevent wear, coat shaft splines with a dry lubricant.

B. Mounting & Drive Connections:

  • Pump shafts are meant to be installed in couplings having a slip fit. Pounding can destroy bearings.
  • The pilot ensures correct mounting and shaft alignment on the pump mounting flange. Ensure the pilot sits tightly in the power source’s accessory pad. When tightening the mounting screws, one has to be cautious not to cause misalignment of parts.

C. Shaft Rotation:

  • Shaft rotation (R or L) is determined by position 8 of the model code imprinted on the pump mounting flange.
  • Never operate a pump in reverse direction of rotation. It will seize up causing an expensive repair bill.

D. Piping & Tubing

  • Before fitting, all pipes and tubing must be cleaned properly. Sandblasting, wire brushing, pickling, and power flushing with a clean solvent for loose particles’ removal are some common methods of cleaning namely recommended ones.

To prevent excessive turbulence and friction of oil flow, try and keep bends in tubing to a minimum number where possible. Sharp bending should never occur in tubing at all costs; though it should not have any less than three times its inside diameter as the recommended minimum radius for bends.
